HEALTHY FOODS TASTE TESTING GRANT PROGRAM

A good way to trial a new menu item for your canteen is to hold a taste test providing free samples to your customers. A grant of up to $100.00 is available to help facility operators introduce a new menu item in their facility. This grant is available only while funds last.

INTRODUCTION
Many families in our communities spend countless hours every week in sport/recreation activities – eating meals and snacks at canteens and concessions. This project builds on recent efforts by schools across Manitoba to develop and implement healthy food policies. Incorporating healthy foods and beverages into canteens at recreation facilities, along with educations material, allows the families the option to choose healthier choices.

BACKGROUND
Children need a combination of healthy nutritious foods and physical activity for optimal growth. Fast foods and convenience foods are easy to access, but many of them are not considered to be healthy foods. Canadians are now getting one-fifth of their calories from the ‘other’ food group, which are the beverages and foods that do not belong to one of the 4 food groups. The number of meals eaten away from home in the last 30 years has doubled. Seven out of ten children do not get the recommended number of servings of vegetables and fruit each day. These trends of unhealthy eating and lower physical activity have led to obesity rates that have tripled since 1981. Eating healthy foods and beverages has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the athlete and their exercise performance, but many canteens do not carry a variety of healthy nutritious food.

PURPOSE
To provide awareness, education and make available resources to encourage healthy food choices in our communities recreation facilities where families live, learn and play.
